Belle is a black lab, almost 8, and like most pet owners proclaim, I think she is the best dog in the entire world.

Here is the thing…Belle didn’t come from award winning bloodlines; and Belle’s mother didn’t even want her when she was born. She was the first-born and it was the mother’s first puppy, which I had the great fortune to watch. I remember Belle’s mom having her and being the runt of the litter and still in the birthing sack. Belle’s mom just left her to go to another spot to have the rest of her puppies. It was very sad to watch.

I knew I wanted her because I related to Belle. I was always smaller than my friends, didn’t have the blood lines of royalty to pave my life for me, and knew that there were people in my life that cared about me enough to want to see me become my best possible self.

Being a hunter, I had always wanted a really well trained dog, so I sent her off to a trainer where she was trained by the one of the nations best and worked with her for 9 months. I was able to take her home on weekends when I wanted, to work with the training and spend some quality time with my precious dog.

Belle became the only dog from the litter to become anything more than just another average black lab. Anyone who has met Belle will tell you that she is a machine when it comes to hunting and the absolute best when it comes to being around people (for years I have brought her to my office with me). She always just has a way of putting smiles on people faces including my own, no matter what kind of mood I’m in.

I write this today because Belle was trained and conditioned to become a great hunter, house pet, and loyal best friend. No matter our background, upbringing, shortcomings, etc., just like animals we can be trained and conditioned do or become ANYTHING! So if you want to be able to become a great saxophone player, CEO, mother, or whatever it is, if you want it bad enough, and you condition yourself time and time again, you can become exactly what you want.

Anything is attainable for humans, with proper training, conditioning, belief and determination.

Defining Failure

Business

achieve

Edison

fail

failure

success

temporary defeat

What is Failure….Really? Seriously, let that sink in for a second…..

Can you imagine what kind of determination, belief in oneself, and perseverance he must have had to continue on after the 8,478th time???? He knew that those so-called “failures” was really only a case of “temporary defeat” and that there was something wrong with his plan, which needed to be changed and fixed.

Not to mention other greats like Henry Ford, James J. Hill, Michael Jordan…they ALL admittedly experienced in their own way “temporary defeat” and didn’t let their “failure” beat them down. In business, I think that execution is one of the necessary learned skills that is imperative for any entrepreneur or business to be a success. This brings me to my next thought and today’s blog post:

Execution doesn’t do anything if it’s not coupled with proper planning. Planning prior to execution is the recipe for success.

How to do this:

1. Put together a strategic plan for what you would like to achieve. I suggest trying to keep things as simple and attainable as possible so you don’t end up setting your goals to high and become disappointed. That being said, be sure to have your end goal as big as you want it, no matter what anyone else thinks. Less than one page with simple numbered steps is a good start.

2. Execution is a learned skill. It is a doggedness and a never give up attitude that when you put your mind to something that you will no matter what complete and achieve it. Sometimes its fun and other time it feels like it’s the worst thing you’ve ever done and you can barely bring yourself to do it. Push on, and execute no matter what. Fully Execute.

Put together your strategic plan (which will always end up being different BTW, and that’s OK) so you have a basis to work from and execute on each of your steps and benchmarks along the way until your plan is complete. This will not only give you great satisfaction of accomplishment but also bring you to whatever it is that you are trying to achieve.

With proper planning and execution anything is attainable.
