  1. Very interesting and a topic I have wrestled with, too.

I’ve always been Matthew to my parents and sister, but my brother calls me Matt and it seems “formal” to use “Matthew” at work. My wife, who is American, also calls me “Matt”, as do my clients now.

    Secretly, I probably prefer “Matthew”…

I used to be Matthew Greene, but then took my wife’s name as well to become Matt Craig-Greene (she is also “Craig-Greene”, as are our kids). At first I liked the change, but now I wonder what my real reason for doing it was…

Very similar story for myself, and have always been Matthew to my family, girlfriends, and business and Matt to friends. A funny thing that I catch every now and again, not sure if you get this…I will introduce myself as “hi, I’m Matthew”, and they will respond back with “good to meet you Matt” WTF?!?!?!? :) Anyways, I think I secretly as well like “Matthew” better since that was the name my parents gave me at birth.
